Anyone know of a service that I can dial a number, hold my cell phone up to the radio then receive a text?

Believe it or not, you're not far off. Arbitron (the ratings people in the US and UK) are working on the portable people meter. This is a pager-like device that picks up an embedded signal, then reports your listening, by phone, while charging overnight.

Also, many stations are using RDS, which displays song info on your radio. Of course XM and Sirius both display information about the song that's playing on their receivers. I suspect WorldSpace does, too.

There are other commercial monitoring services that are used by stations and consultants that don't do exactly what you're asking, but do keep track of what's played and where.

There is a website www.yes.com where you can get the previous seven days music from many US stations.

Verizon Song ID has this exact service for their newer phones. I use it on my LG Env. You get a display of the song and artist, along with a link to purchase the song. You just hit a button, hold the phone near the speaker....and in a few seconds, you get the info. It's also emailed to you. Very cool!
