  1. I believe Wright-Patterson AFB in Ohio has one. It's on a restricted part of the base so you'd have to contact them about visiting hours and such. http://www.nationalmuseum.af.mil/factshe...

  2. Quoted from http://home.att.net/~jbaugher1/p81.html :

"The XP-81 program was officially terminated on May 9, 1947. Both prototypes were redesignated ZXF-81 in 1948, indicating a testbed status. In 1949, they were both stripped of useful parts and placed on a photographic and bombing range at Edwards AFB. The remains of both machines were stored for a long time at the Flight Test Museum at Edwards. They have now been moved to the USAF Museum at Wright Patterson AFB for eventual restoration and display."

The home page of the Air Force Museum at Wright-Patterson AFB says this about the CONVAIR XP-81

"This aircraft is located in the Research & Development Gallery on a secure part of Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. Click here for visiting instructions.

The Convair twin-engine XP-81, tested in 1944-1945, was powered by a conventional turbojet engine and also a turboprop engine in which most of the power was used to turn a propeller rather than being expended as jet thrust. Originally, turboprops offered greater fuel economy than turbojets, but this advantage was offset by improvements in turbojet design."

  3. Only two prototypes ever I bet after the poor performance the planes were melted down. Two different fuels? did they ever back in 1945 think this would work? And to close to the end of the WAR to bring such a ugly duckling to production.
