    visit Lake Burley Griffin,

    Wilsons Promontory

  2. Canberra

  3. There's a stop about 5 minutes off the hume, it's called the Dog n a Tuckerbox or similar. You could also stop at Goulburn, visit the big Merino. Goulburn's got quite a nice little array of food etc

  4. Holbrook is the name of the submarine.

    Albury is pretty good.

The Victorian towns are to far off the freeway & you will be in Melbourne in no time after Albury but Shepparton is nice.

    Goulburn is okay.

  5. Holbrook does indeed have a submarine. Holbrook was called Germantown but when we were at war with the germans the locals changed the name to a british war hero called Holbrook. So somehow his navy career and this submarine are tied together.  All seems rather odd today.

Gundagai is a little bit interesting. The town was originally built on a flood plain. The local aborigines did warn the town folk but were ignored. Anyway the town flooded and the aborigines had to go and pull the silly white folk out of the water...the ones that survived that is. You can stil see some foundations where the town used to be and a very old bridge.

The Niagra Cafe is somewhat of an icon in the area, still had the plates on the window from John Curtín's (Former PM during WW2) visit when I was last there. Not sure if it still exists. Plus of course the dog on the tucker box.

So not much to do along the Hume Highway but some history. About all I can come up with.

Northern Victoria is perhaps more interesting.

  6. Holbrook, an inland town, has a submarine.  It just does.

The Hume Hwy is pretty boring.  If you have a bit of time go via Thredbo and Tallangatta, or to Jindabyne then down to Cann River and Gippsland.  Slower, but a lot more interesting.

  7. Wangaratta; Albury/Wodonga; Holbrook.  Both Yass and Goulburn are a few kms off the bypasses, but worth a visit.

Forget Canberra.  It's a good one hour's drive off the Hume Highway, and you'll need at least one hour to get back again.
