  1. amtrack is government subsidized/owned.  There isn't any private competition on the rails as far as I know....

  2. Amtrak is it. There is nothing else.

  3. Amtrak provides virtually all passenger rail service in the United States.  The private railroads got out of the business years ago, since it wasn't making money for them on most routes.  On occasion, there is a company providing "deluxe" service, in the Orient Express style, on selected routes, at very high prices.  I believe that there may be such a service at present provided by GrandLux, although I belive they use Amtrak to pull their equipment.  Such service is more of a "land excursion" for wealthy folks, rather than standard transportation.

Be aware that there is no single Amtrak train that goes coast to coast.  You can do it with a single change of train, though, typically in Chicago.  For instance, you can take the Capitol Limited from Washington, DC to Chicago, and then change to the Southwest Chief to Los Angeles.

For more information about Amtrak, their website is www.amtrak.com.

There is a somewhat equivalent service in Canada, called VIA, that runs passenger train service that goes more or less across that country, although I believe that it takes three trains to make that trip.  For more information about VIA, their website is www.viarail.com.

  4. Grey hound

  5. no

  6. n o go to yahoo amtrak or call 18oo-927-5843 188-go amtrac. you can hook on your own pullman if you are very rich  but then you hook on to amtrak so the tracks go where they will. I love traveling amtrac.. the cresent thestarlight..also the surf liner the akilla in the northeast all of them go to canada take a euro from vancouver change go on a euro from toronto to quebec woh fast i mean fast ..then go over to ny or you can do it the other way cross the ny over to niagra. what a great fast way to travel and comfrotable magnafique!

  7. If you talk about North America, in Canada there is Via Rail, you will need to change in (at least) Toronto.

In Europe/Asia you have several long distance tracks, all starting from Moscow, so you will have to change there at least. Like Amsterdam - Moscow - Vladivostok.
