Hi, at school I help out with Autistic and mentally retarded kids. I was wondering if anyone knew of any other programs I could help volunteer for? Thanks.

  1. One of the most helpful things you can do is organize an informal support group.  Send home flyers with the children you help each day asking for parents to contact you if they would be interested in forming a support group.  Ask THEM what they need.  Most would love a support group so they can network and get to know other parents.  They might also absolutely love a babysitter every once in awhile so they can get a break.  Parents of special-needs kids are often overwhelmed.

  2. special olympics

  3. There a lot of summer camps, I know of camp Little Giant. There are MANY options.. I would recommend camps though.

  4. ARC and Easter Seals are natioin wide organizations

lok under social services in your yellow pages

for places that serve people with autism and cognitive impairments (not retarded)

learn to use people first language to make yorself more marketable-

    say a PERSOn with Autism

    not AUTISTIC PERSON

    A PERSON with Cognitive disabilities

    not Retarded Person
