Question:

Anyone know of some natural treatments/remedies for an 8 year old with severe adhd???

My child takes everything to the extreme-- as far as being defiant, very argumentative, and acting very malicious towards his younger brother. It's his way or the highway. I can't even ask one simple thing of him and it's always, "but, yeah but, I just... Um, but..." Any time I ask or tell him to do something, it's never just, "Ok, Mom."

I don't want to necessarily put him on drugs to treat him, and I know by doc's reports that he does have adhd, but none of the doctors want to put him on meds anyway, so,... has anyone gone through the same thing with their child? Are there any herbal medicines out there that can help calm my child down so he won't fly off the handle every 5 minutes? Please help!

  1. this is a fantatic book that my friends have used with their ADHD kids. It is hard to follow and they ended up putting them on meds but are now using it conjunction with the meds and noticed a huge difference. There are things that can make it worse that you would never even realise. Apples for example sets off some kids. Have a look through the site.

Also, for the never just doing as they are told, that is not all ADHD. that is being a kid. I have a 9 year old who is the same and he does not have ADHD. Sometimes that is just kids. I come down harder on him for doing it or give him more jobs for not doing it when asked

  2. You should be careful doing herbs with a child, they aren't titrated properly for their bodies and they can OD easily.

You can look into changing his diet though, many people have found success with the Feingold diet.

  3. The Alberta Children's Hospital in Canada was looking at a formula (of nutrients) that might help with adhd kids. They spent years checking it out, and it got a good approval rating.

  4. Hi Celery_1, I agree with Heather to work on his diet first. Nutrient deficiency and eating junk food have been found to be able to get kids running in all directions! You can get good info on adhd vitamins and adhd diet here =>

Go through the pages carefully so that you will be able to make informed decisions on how to deal with the situation you are in. Good luck.

  5. Sweetie, you need to get your man involved. What does he think about this behavior? Once you two are on the same page you need to act together. I hope your youngest is safe. Take care and God bless.

  6. You could try St. John's Wart.

I heard that helps with ADHD

    Good luck!!

  7. I taught my ADHD son to calm himself at that age. Every time he got upset or real hyper I would sit Indian style on the floor and set him on my lap. I would cross hims arms over his chest and put mine over his. We would sit like that until he calmed down . Sometimes it takes a while. He is now 11 and to this day if he gets upset or real hyper I catch him holding himself like that and rocking. Make sure while you are doing this you are talking calmly. This training period took about 3 months, but it did work. With adhd children please understand their minds race and they can't control it. When I see he is getting anxious I give him something to do. I hope this helps. Children with ADHD are amazing thinkers. They can come up with the most incredible ideas because in their minds they know no boundaries. I love playing with my son. He always keeps us entertained.

  8. I have it and have found that sugar and red food coloring set me off. Try reduing his diet. Reward him with things like stickers when he does things right and when he does things wrong take away his favorite toys and make him earn them back.

  9. Change his diet and check for food intolerances. Dairy allergies often cause behavior problems that are mistaken for ADHD. Google food allergies and behavior problems and you'll find a lot of info. My son can't eat gluten, dairy or artificial colors because it makes him an out of control, emotional wreck. I've also read that a lot of kids with ADHD have magnesium deficiencies and they make a kids magnesium supplement- I think it is called "Kids Calm" or something close to that. I saw it at the health food store. It might be worth looking into for your son. Anything is better than loading him up with amphetamines like they do so many kids nowadays. Good luck. =]

  10. You might try one of the Web Doctors. The one we use is Dr. Scott his public email is doctorscotts@yahoo.com

He is more in to natural things.
