I found this interesting tidbit:

http://proicehockey.about.com/od/collectivebargainingfaq/f/nhl_salaries.htm

the 07-08 salary was higher than the 03-04 pre-lockout salary, even after the big dip in salary in the post-lockout season.

Interesting?

  1. The salary cap increased about 8 million, and rosters didnt grow in size, so regardless of what deals are made between now and October, yes it will break 2 million.

  2. I think it already has...

The most a team can have under contract is 24 (I think, it might be 1 or 2 more or less)

Each team has 56.6 million to spend.

So divide 56.6 by 24 and you get 2.35 million per player.

Therefore the average NHL salary for 2008-2009 is around 2.35 million per player.

  3. You'll have to wait for all the signings and arbitration's to occur.

    2007-2008 $1.9 million

    2005-06 $1.46 million.

    2003-04: $1.83 million.

    1997-98: $1.17 million.

    1994-95: $572,000.

    1990-91: $271,000.

***** a lot of people answering your question seem to ASSUME that because there is a cap every team will spend to that extreme. I think it will be close to 2 mil.

  4. It will most likely break 2 million.  You can go to http://www.hockeybuzz.com/cap-central/ and add up all the signed players and add up the actual payroll.  Then it's just Payroll / Players.  I'm not bored enough to do that just yet.
