  2. Although the effect of ECT on memory is transient, there is potentially a risk that some memory loss could be permanent. This seems to be the only long-term effect I would be worried about. Other than that, it is a pretty safe, highly effective, and painless (contrary to common belief) treatment modality, which is unfurtunately under-utilized mostly because of some people who don't know anything about it and would let severely depressed and psychotic patients suffer.
