I'm just gob smacked at the suspensions this week, theres so many striking offences and the punishments are all over the place.. (NOT happy bout Amons 4week ban)

With Solomon fronting up tonight, I was just curious of the wat the longest suspension is, as theres been alot of talk bout it ending his season..

I know Hall got 10 and 7 for early plea but Solomon doesnt have that option, is 10weeks the longest given ban?

  1. Phil Carmen from Essendon got 20 weeks in the 80s for headbutting an umpire

  2. On the radio before talking about Soloman's suspension they said it was the longest since 1997, when Greg Williams pushed and umpire and got 9 weeks. Just thinking now though, didn't Alastair Lynch cop a hefty suspension in what turned out to be his final game in the GF against Port Adelaide a few years ago.

    Ten years for this

  3. John Bourke

the collingwood reserve player before the game became national and the swans were the only interstate team he played a reserve game against the swans at the Lake Oval and disputed a call and pushed the ump to the ground and was suspended 10 years

  4. not sure, but it was probably given to David Rhys Jones or Dermie!

Jokes aside, John Bourke being put out effectively for life is the longest one I can think of, he got 10 years.

We don't get sentences of 8 weeks commonly these days as players - well, most of them! - realise that suspensions cost them drinking money and may jeopardise careers as well eg Solomon and Hall at present.

Mind you, I wish we had suspensions for umpire malpractice, a couple of the fellas now malpractising would never work again.

  5. **Ten weeks in the modern game is a lot but I don't know if anyone has received longer.

I think when Greg Williams pushed an umpire back in the 90's, he got about nine weeks and everyone made such a big deal about it at the time.**

  6. Doug Fraser and Alex Lang of Carlton were suspended for 99 matches for bribery in 1910! In the RESERVES, John Burke of Collingwood was suspended for 10 years because of numerous offences. So this cannot be classified as the longest ever suspension, because it wasn't in a senior VFL team.

These were a long time ago, and I'm not sure what the longest suspensions are in the modern game =)

  8. In the mid 80's at senior level, Phil Carman playing for Essendon  was suspended for 20 match's for head butting a boundary umpire, in a game at Moorabbin against St - Kilda.    The umpire invading Carman's personal space, ran in chested him, and stood on his foot, all in an attempt to say  he was being reported for striking Garry Sidebottom, from an incident just just moments earlier.   Carman pushed forward with his chest, similar to what the umpire had done, and was then reported for a head butt ?.   Last season Collingwood's Ben Johnson was reported and suspended, 'trial by video',  for a hip and shoulder bump on Melbourne's Daniel Bell, and outed for "7 weeks", Bell "was not injured" in any way like Ling.     Hall of Sydney after his hit on Staker was suspended for 7,  but missed 6 after the same game with a hand injury.    All up for his hit on Staker, a "knockout" king hit, he in fact missed only "1 game".  Ling was hit hard and unfairly, but not "knocked out" and Solomon gets 8.    In my view the AFL system is totally stuffed, they seem to have no idea, and react  to what may please the media and public after each incident.

  9. No,

there have been people who were suspensed for life by the AFL tribunal because they played poorly and took a bribe.

  10. I think it was phil carmen from collingwood

11 weeks for headbutting a umpire

but it could of been more?
