Anyone know the original meaning/intent of the french ring that says "two souls one heart?"?

Everything I've read says it's a great sentiment for weddings, etc. But to me, it seems more appropriate for when you lose your soulmate - as in, when he/she dies. There are still two souls, but only one heart. Anyone know the original intent?

dont have a clue but i think its more like theres 2 people but they are so together and in love that they share something so special they just have one heart and work in harmony with eachother
