  1. Inherit the Wind - first a play, then a film, then 3 times a tv movie, probably novelized along the way.  I didn't recall the title either, but googled "scopes."  The teacher was named Scopes, and he was defended by Clarence Darrow, prosecuted by William Jennings Bryan.

We laughed at it in the early-to-mid '60s, back in Kansas.  Then, in the past ten years, Kansas has been fighting that same battle.  I never would have thought it could happen.

  2. Inherit the Wind by Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee (no not the civil war general)

  3. You may be thinking of a short book by Renee Graves, titled "The Scopes Trial", one of the Cornerstones of Freedom series of books for young adults, often used in schools. It tells the story of a 1925 court case concerning a schoolteacher accused of teaching evolution to his high school students in a strictly fundamentalist Christian-based school system.

A play based on the Scopes Trial, "Inherit the Wind", by Jerome Lawrence and Robert Lee, is also used in schools for study.

Both books are available currently through Amazon.com and other booksellers.
