  1. You would have to do a slow-motion analysis of a recording of the race, with the clock, and chart his position at each tenth of a second and graph it, to come up with a precise measurement of what his maximum speed was.

Those numbers in the first answers are just his average speed, which was much less than his max speed, because he started out at 0 and had to accelerate.

I haven't seen any analysis but Ato Boldon said he figured Bolt could have been going in excess of 30mph at the point where he eased up and started coasting to the finish. A lot of 100m races have had a max of about 27 mph. It depends on the runner's style, sprinters like Asafa Powell or Ben Johnson start fast and hit their max speed early and maintain it, while top-speed demons like Usain Bolt and Carl Lewis don't have good starts but rely on their extra gear, higher top speed, to get them to the front.

If Bolt wasn't running 30mph in the 100 final, he sure was close. I expect he will hit 30 in the 200 final.

btw 30mph is a little over 48 kph, about 48.27kph.

  2. 37.15 Km/h

and a cheetah can run 90km/h!!!

  3. well he ran it in what, 9.68 seconds? that's 10.3199 meters/second which translates to 23.084 miles/hour for the race, which is 37.15164 km / hr
