  1. Pink Lake is a meromictic lake located in Gatineau Park, Quebec, Canada.

Meromictic means the lake has layers of water that don't mix with each other.

This lake is in danger of eutrophication due to human activities.  Eutrophication is an increase in chemical nutrients (typically compounds containing nitrogen or phosphorus) in an ecosystem.  The term is often used to mean the resultant increase in an ecosystem's excessive plant growth and decay - further effects include lack of oxygen and severe reductions in water quality, fish, and other animal populations.

Due to the meromictic properties of Pink Lake there are ancient forms of bacteria which use sulfur instead of oxygen to perform photosynthesis. These bacteria form a layer about 7 metres from the bottom to avoid the oxygenated water and maximize sunlight exposure.

Park management forbids swimming in the lake, walking domestic animals near it, straying from the wooden boardwalk for sight-seers, and throwing stones into the lake.

All these activities increase the damage to the lake's fragile ecosystem.
