Anyone know what this weird plant is?

my aunt has this weird plant growing on the side of her steps on the front porch along with all of the other flowers and she doesn't know what it is. it has humungous fat green leaves at the bottom (they get smaller as they reach the top), a thick ruffly and fuzzy stem, and green fuzzy/spiky little balls with a white tip. Some of the tips have small opennings. Does anyone know what this plant is?

Do the little balls look like they are about to bloom?  It almost sounds like a Hollyhock.
