Anyone know when the Rugby Union and Rugby league split occured and why?

The answer re professionalism is pretty accurate. The whole issue surrounded broken time payments, tha is those miners and mill workers who played rugby lost income by playing rugby and wanted to be compensated for lost time due to playing and for injuires.

It happened in England in 1895 and was basically over player payments, i.e. professionalism. Rugby union remained amateur until the 1990's whereas Rugby league was professional from its beginnings.

But whereas Rugby union has spread around the world, league is only played to any extent in Britain, Australia and New Zealand.
