  1. Cannock Chase - German Military Cemetery

The German Cemetery Near Broadhurst Green

The German Cemetery near Broadhurst green, on Cannock Chase is a memorial to some 5,000 German war dead, where the servicemen's graves are marked by headstones of Belgian granite, set in plots of heather and tended by gardeners.

The cemetery is a tribute to the spirit of co-operation existing between the Commonwealth War Graves Commission and the Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgraberfürsorge (German War Graves Commission).

Each year since the memorial was established in 1962, parties of young Germans, mostly 16-19 year olds, have come to Staffordshire and have worked on the grave plots under guidance of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission caretaker.

The cemetery is also a tribute to the people of Staffordshire who through their County Council, gave the land on which the cemetery stands to the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, which in turn administers it on behalf of the German Commission. First approaches were made in 1959 by the Germans, who were keen to find a site on the Chase near the existing Commonwealth Cemetery, which contains 388 graves of men from the two World Wars, 287 of them German serviceman.

In March 1962, the County Council made a gift of the land to the German government. The design of the buildings, and the siting of the cemetery in the beautiful valley at Broadhurst Green, was the work of three men: Professor Diez Brandi of Göttingen in Germany, and Harold Doffman and Peter Leach, partners in a Stafford firm of architects.

German servicemen from both wars, sailors buried at seaports round the coast of Britain, airmen shot down inland and soldiers, most of them prisoners of war buried in Churchyards throughout the county, were transferred from their burial places to the Chase Military Cemetery between 1964 and 1966. German servicemen buried in British Military Cemeteries and in war grave plots in civilian cemeteries churchyards were not moved.

Each year, thousands of people come to the Cannock Chase Cemetery. Some come to lay flowers on the German graves, some come to walk quietly around the heather-covered grave plots, some regard it as just another stopping place on the tourist's round, but few can fail to leave the cemetery deeply moved by its peace and tranquility.

Thanks for your question, I had no idea we had a German Cemetery.  I also found out that German kids visit the graves each year to lay flowers and so forth and the land for the site was given by the people of Cannock Chase back in the late 50s early 1960s.

    German soldiers RIP etc.
