I just moved into a new house that only has dial up right now, the computer my boyfriend and I have right now is a mutt. My boyfriend's sister had given us a tower and we got an old monitor, keyboard and mouse from my mom and then when we moved into this house that we bought from his sister, she left her old computer that has a fried hard drive. So we have a tower with a bad hard drive, a tower with a bad motherboard and a good hard drive, and a new hard drive. We were going to switch out hard drives to have one full working tower but we didn't feel like messing with it last night. My brother is in between jobs and staying with my dad right now and has his computer at my mom's not being used, so he let us borrow his tower until we fix ours or he wants it back.

Sorry this is so long, but here's the real question...we hooked up his tower and everything and it started up but then the screen said "the monitor is working properly, check power and cables" and wouldn't start up. So we checked the cables and everything was in good and it finally popped up with the background my brother had. It didn't load correctly, showing the Window's screen beforehand or anything, no icons would pop up nor would the task bar at the bottom. He got his computer in '05 and that monitor is kinda old and he never hooked up his dial up modem, so he thought it might have something to do with that, (he thought the computer might be searching for connection or something since the internet was hooked up ) so we unhooked the internet and restarted it and the background picture wouldn't even pop up until we hooked it back up. I don't know why, I wouldn't think the internet would have anything to do with the monitor not working or the computer not booting.

Is it just that a newer tower isn't compatible with dial up without the dial up modem? Or is there something we were just looking over? As far as I know all the cables were hooked up correctly. We're getting a new computer within the next couple months, but we just wanted to rig up something for now. Thank you in advance for your help and sorry again for the details being so long.

  1. I think there is something wrong with your video card. Try checking it or replace it. If it doesn't work a think you have a big problem, and that is your computers mother board.

  2. i suspect that the motherboard may have burnt out.

does your computer light stay on but nothing appears on the screen?
