I want to go backpacking in Europe, and I want to fly Ryan air, between the cities I want to visit. I think this will save money and time instead of taking the train. the thing is, I will be getting my reservations with Ryan air in advance, for about 10 trips. Any advise on that? any hidden fees, any canceled flights, are they usually on time? any tips at all? thanks a lot in advance..

  1. Ryanair-Airports or often located “in the middle of nowhere”. This table shows the distances and means of public transport  to reach the cities.

Destination • Ryanair-Airport • Distance from City-Center(kms/ms) • Mode of Travel • Duration in Minutes • Single Fare

    Barcelona • Girona • 90/56 • Coach • 70 • 12,00 €

    Barcelona • Reus • 110/68 • Coach • 90 • ?

    Berlin • Schönefeld • 24/15 • Train (RB/S) • 29/42 • 2,80 €

    Bologna • Forli • 89/55 • Coach or Bus + Train(IC/R) • 85 or 15 + 36/58 • 12,00 € or 1,00 € + 8,20/3,90 €

    Brussels • Charleroi • 57/35 • Bus + Train • 18-20 + 51-56 • 11,00 € (C61-Ticket°)

    Dusseldorf • Weeze • 85/53 • Coach or Bus + Train • 90 or 11 + 67 • 14,00 or 13,80 €

°= the C61 ticket (special price) is valid from the Charleroi Airfield to all train stations in Belgium

¹= special 50% reduced fare for Ryanair passengers showing their travel tickets

² = Price for the coach varies since two individual bus companies are providing the service; Price for the bus to Bergamo train station is reduced to 1,65 €, if only one piece of luggage not to exceed 20x40x60 cm is carried.

  2. Ryan air is IRISH Okay? From Ireland! Not London!

I've never had any problems flying with them. Generally on time, no hidden fees except for taxes which they tell you about as you're booking.

You'll have to pay for your meal if you want to eat on the flight, you won't have anything fancy like a television or an in flight radio, have a good trip!

Oh! One thing they're legendary for - check the name and location of the airport you're flying to, sometimes people see the name of the city or district and just assume it's the main airport of that city, but it's actually quite a bit out and they have to get a bus.

    Edit:

I have never heard of people not being allowed to bring on hand luggage. The rule is one item of hand luggage. Not "One bag on the plane"

  3. Ryan Air are usually pretty cheap - you can get flights for 1p + taxes sometimes.  I'd say be wary of charges for things like not checking in online, taking hold baggage rather than just hand luggage, and the charge for excess baggage (some can be £12/kilo) - all these are becoming really common with UK no frills airlines.

Specific to Ryan Air - I know quite a few people who have lost their bags, they seem to be notorious for it.  But if you just take hand baggage then you'll avoid this and the hold baggage charge.  But check the max weight allowed, it's usually much less for the cheaper airlines.

One thing to be wary of in Europe is the rule on hand baggage.  Depending on the airport and the airline you may only be allowed to take one single bag onto the plane - so for girls, no hand luggage + handbag...

  4. actually if you come backpacking why don't you take the train? It will be much faster, because Ryan Air always flies to remote airports.

If you really insist on flying you should check the special deals of the regular airlines, very often they have good deals, you will get a lot more service and you will be much closer to the cities you want to visit.

Your risk of losing luggage is just as high as with other airlines, because luggage is handled by other companies than airlines in Europe.

One thing you should know when traveling with Ryanair is that they are extremely strict at checking in times, if you show up 2 minutes too late at the airport they won't allow you anymore on the flight and you are forced to buy a very expensive ticket for the next flight they have (and sometimes that would be the next day).  The major airlines  can be more flexible.

  5. Very cheap to fly with but do not exceed the luggage allowance as the excess baggage cost can exceed the airfare.
