Anyone knows how safe is Buenos Aires for American traveler who doesn't speak any Spanish at all? And what is the crime rate in that city

a few years ago, there was a peso debacle.  their money went south and fast.  before that it was more like a european country.  i went there several years after the economy went south and it was very very safe even after the people suddenly became poorer.  i was alone and i felt safe as i would in barcelona, brussels or bern.  i do speak spanish, but that does not matter.  it is safe

it reminded me of southern europe.

even in the evening, safe.  

you might see iguazu falls (take a plane ride there and overnight) and you also might go to colonia, uruguay via ferry for an overnight.  it is very quick to get there, and very cool.

i stayed at a hostel (shared accomodations) and found some people to go out at night to the clubs.  i did not feel i needed to do this becasue i felt completely safe, but it was easier to share a cab, and well, safety in numbers.

you can stay at the rich part of town...polonco? (or something like that).  it is where evita was burried....but better just stay near the avenue downtown.  people are out all night long.  the hustle and bustle of the day..but not THAT crowded.

one thing you can do to protect yourself, don't take valuables and don't flash an expensive camera (or put on a soulder bag around your neck if you are a photographer and must do so.)  

appear knowledgable of where you are going....go into a store if you appear lost in the evening or something....but tthen again, someone will likely come up and ask you if you need help.  

it is safe enough.

Now a days a lot of people speak English because we have  many tourist here in Buenos Aires,  be quiet about this because in all hotels , hostels and attractions speak English.
