  1. The 405 is pretty much ALWAYS loaded up.

I think it is at it's worst in the section you are talking about during the afternoon/evening commute.  Yeah, from probably 3-7 PM.  I travel the opposite way in the evening and those poor suckers are all backed up almost all the way to the top of the hollywood hills (ok, Mulholland).

  2. during rush hour

  3. Here is the link to the Live traffic conditions for the greater metropolitan LA area. Ironically, about 4pm is a good time to travel, but after 5pm when work lets out, forget about it. I have driven from the Valley to San Pedro in as little as 45 minutes when leaving aroung 3:30-4:00pm. Beware traveling in the late night hours before checking the conditions. Caltrans is doing a LOT of expansion work and they routinely shut down the freeway to just one lane at 3:00am! Or they are filming the new Will Smith movie at the 405 and 105 interchange from 3:00am to Sunrise

  4. the 405 is always a disaster except for late nite, if you have to drive it anytime from 2:00 to 9:00 plan on a lot of stop and go at under 10mph. you can probably check local news websites or caltrans site for traffic reports

  5. Which direction are you talking about?  The 405 meets the 5 in 2 places.  Are you approaching LAX from the north or south?

If you are coming from the north, then that stretch is really bad at all times except late at night, but yes 4-6pm will be the worst.

  6. it's between 4pm-6pm
