  1. OK I HAVE SUCCESSFULLY FIXED THIS!

    you will need...

    arctic silver 5 thermal compound

    and some machine screws.

there are 2 x-clamps holding the GPU and CPU in place.

take these off then clean all the thermal compound off.

replace with the arctic silver 5 thermal compound, then use the screws to replace the heatsinks.

the GPU and CPU uses different sized screws. I only had the correct size for the CPU so i only replaced that.

1 day later NO ROD! exept the disk drive doesnt work now! lol

  2. you need to get it for repairs.

  3. Christ almighty. What have you done to that thing?!

Basically, the three red light system is a warning. One red light, you need to switch off for a while. 2 red lights, you probably need repairs. Three red lights, and you DEFINITELY need a repair. They indicate that a crucial component has broken.

This is something you should not attempt to do yourself. Either send it to Microsoft for repairs if it's still under warranty, or find a repair from somewhere else if not.

If it costs too much to fix, then the only thing you can do is bin it, I'm afraid. Either that, or sell it for spares on eBay.

    Hope this helps,

    Tom.

  4. Gamers call that the red ring of death. Call Microsoft and have them repair or replace your system. I don't think there's any other way to fix it, unless you can program hard drives.

  5. These People are retarded. There is a way to fix the xbox 360 3 red rings without using microsoft, though you would have to know a little bit about eletronics and work with them well. its a proccess called the x-clamp replacement and its proven to fix most consoles with the 3 rrod. basically what has happened is the clamps that hold down the cpu and the gpu warp the board and after much gameplay it causes the sodder to break. this is the main cause of the rrod, but not the only. If you have broken the seal on the xbox 360 then you cannot send it to microsoft and should go to www.craigslist.org and post looking for someone to fix the console, i can fix them personally but that would be your best bet. Probably you havent opened up the console and it still has the sticker as microsoft has extend the warranty to cover any console that suffers from the rrod. just call 18004myxbox and they will fix it for free, they will send you a box with a prepaid shipping label and you will get it back in about 2-3 weeks.

  6. Yes, send it in.

  7. DONT try the towel fix..you will endup destroying the console even more and microsoft will laugh at you if you even dare send it to them after that.

Like the two previous guys said above me about the X-clamps...this is the way to go if you wanna fix the machine, i have done this myself and i can tell you hand on heart it works.

It is a pain in the butt to open it up but its worth it in the long run when you know you have done a better job than microsoft ever done at fixing them...years later my console is still going so it shows it works to replace the X-clamps.

    Nomore RED LIGHTS = Heaven

What put me off sending it to microsoft was, they never really fixed any of my friends consoles when they got redlights..2 months down the line they ended up sending them back to be repaired again.

I'm a very unpatient person lol so i couldnt live like that, on the thought it could die again i decided to risk fixing it myself.

  8. Unfortunately you do need to ring Microsoft to come and take the console away for repair. They can take several weeks to get the console repaired and returned to you. This has been a bad problem for Microsoft which has hampered the 360. If you look on ebay you can find people selling items that will let you fix the 3 red rings but i wouldn't bother buying these as they could be a scam and have no guarantee that they work.

  9. safest bet is to givemicrosoft a call and get them to repair it, so what if it takes 2weeks??

I had RRoD last month, took 13days from havin me phone them up to tell them - having it returned, fixed and with a new DVD drive and 1months free gold live.

Forget the towel trick and also doing it yorself unless you have any experience in taking apart pc's etc..

Another option if you cant wait that long is to see if theres an independant pc store by you and pop in n ask them if they could fix it.

I know 3-4 by me and they all fix them, some as cheap as £40 and it would take 2-3 days.

I would have gone down that route but i didnt want to pay for it to be repaired and i could also have lived without my 360 for a few weeks

  10. Hi,

The 3 red light error means that you have a general hardware failure and this is caused when the GPU and the CPU overheat and this causes the soldering to becomes loose.

When the soldering breaks off you get this problem.

All you need to do is send it back to Microsoft and that is if you don't mind waiting for up to 4 weeks while they fix it for you.

To fix it yourself all you need is a good repair guide that will show you how to stop the heat build up on the GPU and the CPU and you will be back in your games in no time.

Make sure if you get a guide that it comes with a full guarantee and also has video previews so you know what you are getting first.

    Hope this helps!

  11. Try the towel fix.... search it in google or youtube is your best bet.... i had 3 red light, otherwise known as ROD [ring of death] and as soon as i saw it i immediatly turned off my xbox. left it for about 3 days and then its worked ever since... btw that was about 3 months ago

  12. Just call 1.800.4MY.XBOX and have MS fix it for free.

There's really no safe way to fix the ring of death.  You can try the towel trick, but you can do more damage.  The towel trick is basically covering the 360 with a towel, turn it on, and generate as much heat as possible in order to melt the solder and hope that the wires will somehow connect back together.  Try the towel trick at your own risk.  It's safer to just have MS fix it.

You can try turning it turn and then turning it back on.  If the ring of death goes away, then just play the game.  If it doesn't, then try unplugging all the cables and then plugging them back in.  If it still doesn't work, just call MS.

  13. That's something the technicians at Microsoft will have to fix. Your system overheated and could have damaged parts which need repairing.

  14. This is the imfamous "Red ring of Death"

you XBOX is DEAD and needs to be taken to sony for repairs  its a know fault thats killed thousands of them if you're lucky it will be under warranty.

ther is no fix other than replacing chips and updating firmware.
