Just curious, I have started driving a smaller car instead of my SUV- saving about $50.00 per week by doing this.

  1. I got really creative...I have a fuel-efficient car as is that gets 36MPG city, and it has a small tank.  I never had to put more than 9.5 gallons in it ever!  But even with that, and gas prices at about $4 a gallon were I'm at, plus a 22-mile (one-way) commute to work, and my weekly gas cost at about $35 a week, ($140 a month), I'm still trying to cut that cost down.

So I decided to buy a motor to install on my bicycle, and turn it into a moped.  It has a 1 gallon gas tank, won't propel my bike any faster than 30MPH, and it gets about 160MPG just using the motor alone.  I'll be able to extend that even further with pedaling.  Plus...its been suggested I mount a motorcycle gas tank on my bicycle for fuel capacity.

Even if I don't , 1 gallon of gas, at 160MPG means I'll get about 3.5 round trips before I have to fill-up,(which would be twice a week), and it would only run me the cost of a gallon of gas, effectively reducing my gas cost by about $25 a week.

And I don't have to worry about highways because I take all county roads to and from work. All I have to worry about is any reckless drivers on the road.  Which were I'm at, such things are few and far between.

  2. See this webpage gives 30 ways to save gas. It worked great for me.

I live in Dallas, TX. We have a great web site to find out every day price. Helps a lot! See if you can find something similar for your city.

  3. I started biking to work a couple of days a week..

  4. I don't do anything different than what I was already doing.

Both of my cars are relatively small compact cars.

I slowed down a while ago.

I check my tire pressure every gas fill-up

I consolidate as many errands as possible.

I  have a motorcycle that I drive to work whenever possible.

But I still have to go to work.  I still need to go to the store to buy food and supplies.  I need to go to other places like the doctor.  I just don't go anyplace unless it is really necessary.

To get the best gas prices in my area I use the Gas Price Watch website.

  5. I have a small car, which is good on gas, but it's hard to tell when your wages are low.  However, I have gone to using a bike, not because of gas prices, but because of food prices.  I can go without a car.  The amount of work I do causes me to eat a lot of food since I burn it off quickly.  I tried to change my eating habits, but apparently, I have a eight cylinder stomach and it shows.  It cost more to feed me than to fill up my car, so I use a bike to do most of my transporting.  I even do my shopping with my bike.  Before I head out, I eat something, but usually, by the time I arrive at my destination, I find myself eating again, so I pack some extra food before I leave and hope I don't eat it on the way.  This is nothing new to me because I did this in college where I had no car, and my bike was my means to get around.  I even carried furniture back on my bike back to my apartment.  So this is nothing new for me.

  6. I am now.  I walk more when I can.  I combine trips or go without items I do not need right away until I am near the store.

I am on the look-out for a job closer to home but more to save my time than money.  The money/gas savings will just be a bonus!

  7. Lol I use public transport only :D

  8. I'm moving closer to work to decrease my commute.

  9. Yeah, my parents still pay for my gas (we own our business, and the business actually pays for it) but I bought a small car, which is manual, and I make sure I don't rev the engine, or anything gas is 4.09 here in good 'ol Clovis, Ca! I think everything will become hybrid. my car get 30/mpg so I'm not hurting nearly as bad as truck drivers! :) but you know what, gas is actually cheaper now than it was in the 60's (I THINK it's the 60's...?) because of how much a dollar goes. it may have only been .30, but they only made 1.00 an hour. SO we are just big complainers! Lol
