  1. I work in special ed and have had several students with it. Each child is different and you will have to find the one thing that works for your child. I had one parent get her son into music and playing the drums and it was quite successful. However, he drums on his desk constantly, but it helps him to concentrate. Don't be afraid to try different things, find out what makes him tick. (Excuse the pun.)

  2. You will discover that all kids learn differently.  Schools like to lump them all together (even in an "individual" program).

There are things you can try at home. But mostly it will be patience, patience, patience.  Don't expect him to learn the same way as everyone else.  Be willing to show him, over and over.  It's not that he isn't listening, it's that he isn't getting it and it may take more time.

Kids with TS are very smart.   But it is the constant interruptions from their own bodies that break the concentration, thus, taking longer.

I hope this helps.  There are many books on teaching kids with disabilities.  We used "magnetic poetry, first words" edition.  They are little magnets that you put on the fridge.   It lets them become familiar with words every day.  Place them at his eye level!

But of course, you will have to find what works for you.  Be patient.  It will happen.

I remember when we were working on reading.  He had already memorized and could remember many, many words before kindergarten.  Then he was switched to a phonics-style program, and it was like throwing a wrench in the works!  Not that either way is hard/easy, it's just (for him) that one way was working and then he was made to do it another way.  That might have been his OCD!

  3. My child has ADHD pos' Tourette (in the middle of assessments) and he was reading words when he began reception.  I believe that his unique learning style that results from his attention difficulties is what helped him learn.

He couldn't focus to listen and learn in class.  Was often removed for making noises/calling out.

However, we used to go walking about everywhere (can't keep an ADHD kid in the house without becoming exhausted trying to keep him entertained and clearing up after his whirlwinds).

As we walked we spotted things like road signs.  He soon learned P for parking, L for learner driver, TAXI, EXIT.

'look Mum theres a p for parking, and another','yes I see them too.  here it's p for pay point, can you think of some more words that have that P in them?

we used to play robot voices. 'how does a robot say van?',   'v-a-n'

I made him shopping lists for the supermarket and though he couldn't read them I read them to him once and he used the initial letters as clues to remember as he looked for his shopping, then as he got better at it looked to see what other letters ther where to help.

I think tou need to observe what he's good at learning and see how you can use that to his advantage

    good luck

    :o)

  4. The SCHOOL is suppose to be teaching him to read. And they are NOT??

YOu need to write a letter to school requesting them to do testing to see if your child can qualify for special ed.

THis is the only way the school is legally required to help with learning problems,.
