Has anyone out there with a hypothyroid had a gastric bypass? Have you lost weight?

I have been on thyroid meds and am still gaining weight and can't lose so I'm considering surgery but want to make sure that it will help with my condition.

I have asked the doctor but am looking for personal experiences. If you've had the lapband, feel free to respond as well.

I have hypo and my energy levels are horrible. I never feel rested and I know that it also has to do with my weight.

Has anyone had to stop the thyroid meds because of the surgery? Energy levels increased? Any Thyroid symptoms improved after surgery? (i.e. dry hair, skin, memory, sleep better, etc.)

Thank you in advance and please no advertisements!

  1. I don't know how much you weigh but If you are considered obese then have a serious talk with your doctor about Lap-banding. Hypothyroidism is bad enough without gastric. You may never be free from thyroid hormones. It takes alot of hard determination and work to lose weight with hypo. I've been taking thyroid pills for thirty years. I've been told unless I'm morbidly obese a doctor woun't even consider the lapband and definitely not gastric. Good luck at whatever you do. I hope the best for you.

  3. I know from experience that if you have a thyroid condition they won't actually do either surgery on you. I'm in the process of getting the band and have been asked numerous times if I had any other diseases that would cause my weight gain, I've said no of course and then asked why. Mainly because if you have an overactive thyroid no matter how much you loose you'll gain it back.

  4. I had gastric bypass 4 years ago. I had previously NEVER had an issue with my thyroid. After going in for my normal blood work, he found that I had hypothyroidism. My doctor that did my gastric bypass has operated on many patients that have thyroid issues, so I don't know where the source that stated with thyroid issues you can't have the surgery. I did start gaining some weight and when I started taking thryoid medicine, which I was informed I will be on the rest of my life, I noticed a DRASTIC change in everything. Feel free to contact me directly for any more information you may want/need.

    Good luck!
