Tomorrow at 23h Irish time 9 of the 10 new EU countries will join the Schengen area. This means that people in those countries can travel around the EU without showing a passport or ID. Pure freedom from government interference!
However, the Irish government has kept us out of Schengen. In 2009 they plan, with the UK, to set up an API system to keep track of all travel and movement. Irish citizens will have to request permission to enter and leave their country and this info will be stored in a massive database.
So while or neighbours on the mainland are scrapping borders Ireland is building a high tech shamrock curtain to track its citizens.
At 23h tomorrow evening (Thu 20th Dec) there will be a protest outside the Dail in Dublin. Anyone going to go?
