4 teen/p*****n youths walking on railroad tracks hit by freight train from behind and all were killed in Southern California (I read it in the LA times newspaper around the mid-1980's?). Engineer sounded horn constantly; but kids kept walking and never turned around. None were troublemakers, suicidal, or had hearing problems. Investigators and victim's families were dumbfounded. Unable to find any reference to this strange incident on the internet.

  1. I remember it as well. What happened was, they couldn't hear the horn because of the Doppler effect. The train was moving away from the sound as it approached the kids. Now you know why you shouldn't walk on the tracks.

    Here's a link to Operation Lifesaver:http://www.oli.org/

It's dedicated to reducing rail accidents.

  2. A teenage girl was killed in the same way in Greensboro, NC in about 1995.  It was ruled a suicide, but there is a good likelihood the same phenomenon was involved.
