Roughly ~20 miles, good roads, some highway, some city. Moderately hilly.

  1. I just went through this myself.  Part of the question is "probability of theft"?  If the odds are that the bike may get beat up, sit in the sun, get rained on, etc., then buy a decent quality bike (Trek, Specialized, etc.) used and a little beat up.  I just purchased a Specialized Hardrock Classic for $100, threw on a rack, bags, and fenders for about $80.  If it gets stolen I'll be irritated, but not heartbroken.  If you have a safe and secure place for your bike, at that distance, I would spend a little more on a lighter frame (aluminum) with a compact crank or triple.  If you will have to shower anyway at work, clipless pedals will give you more power and make you more efficient.  I opted for standard platform pedals as I am 3 miles away and can likely just ride in my street clothes (business casual) so long as I keep the pace moderate.  Good luck.

  2. Specialized has a street/urban bike that is awesome! You can even take it on the trail. I took it on the trail and it was responsive and lithe. Way cool! I can't think of the name of it right now, but it has specialized features made specifically for the harsh urban landscape ie crappy roads.

  3. Get a bike from Walmart! They are as good as any bike shop bike but much cheaper. Don't waste your money on overpriced bikes which  will just breakdown from expensive shops. Yous should be able to find a good bike for under $100 that will work great for a long time.

  4. Sadly cheap have cheap parts, treat your bike with care to last longer. Giant CRS range around £200, Dahon folder popular £350. If you are UK check out Cyclesheme.co.uk you may be eligible for employer to buy bike and they receive VAT, you only pay 60% of bike. Check out participating bike shop. Also get correct bike sized at shop, or good second hand bike.

  5. The first answer is WRONG, do not listen to that!! Buy the best bike you can afford at a real bike shop.

  6. Why not , bike commuting is fun and each day on the saddle is different , you will see wild life , birds , nice flowers , + you will be on good shape and more healthy . Have proper equipment to by protected from bad weather like rain and wind , also yours bicycle must be on good working order . Do not forget that mudguards will keep out dirt from you , good quality tires will prevent flats , cycle bottles will be on demand like good quality lock and you may need panniers or backpack suitable for cycling to carry your needs . You will need bicycle lights for front and rear , is nothing wrong if you blinking like Las Vegas , better to be safe on road then sorry . I do commute 50 km 5 days per week on simillar terrain and no problem at all , just have pleasure from it .
