Question:

Anyone see the 60 minutes story on AFL vs NRL?

Does it look like NRL's days are numbered as NSW kids (and their parents) increasingly choose the real Australian football game over the foreign import and mindless game that is rugby? If you feel like it tell us why you think AFL is so freakingly popular at the moment.

  1. DREAM ON, SYDNEY IS A RUGBY LEAGUE CITY, ALWAYS WILL BE, BECAUSE WE'RE TOUGH IN THE HARBOUR CITY!

    Unlike MELBOURNE!

  2. Get serious.  They focused on a small club in Sydney.

Real Australian Football?  Are you sure?  Wasn't it a derivative of Irish Gaelic football?

We have guest games of AFL at Manuka Oval and crowds of 8000.  AFL will never get a foothold in the ACT.  We don't want it here and unlike the Tasmanians (who deserve an AFL team) are not campaigning for one.

We will stick with NRL & Super 14 and representing Australia on the world stage.  What's the best you can come up with? The Mexicans vs the Spare Parts.  That was a joke.

  3. It will take time for dumb people to stop liking dumb sports like rugby and realise how amazing aussie rules is! its the hardest, most entertaining and the best game in the world! All rugby followers i know just dont want to take any notice of afl porbablly coz they know they will get hooked! rugby is an old fashioned, boring excuse for a game, afl is constantly updating and improving. the time will eventually come when afl has the entire country behind it because they are constantly expanding the game.

    go blues

  4. nah i didnt see it

  5. its popular because of people like me

i go and watch my eagles play

i want to have all the hunky players babys

    im also dumb

  6. To the person above me, Sydney has been an AFL city since the Swans started playing there - so deal with it!!

  7. yes i did

afl is popular because its an Australian game

    Australia is becoming more patriotic

Rugby is an boring English game

  8. Its Simple, Australian Rules is just the better game to play and watch. Rugby is just a boring back and forth game with very little excitement and takes very little skill to play. Aussie Rules has much more skill and excitement. GO AUSSIE RULES.

  9. I  realise this is just a shite stir question but if these sorts of questions have to keep getting put on, can we....

A- call our game by it's name Aussie Rules and not AFL, those kids were not playing 'IN' the AFL.(Australian Football League), that's not too hard to understand guys.

B- The  other game in question is not called 'NRL' or 'RUGBY', it is called Rugby League.  (rugby is rugby union)  (rugby league is referred to as rugby league or league).

Let's all try, buggered if i know how this stuff gets lost in translation, i put a question on about this 3 months back, a lot of people had never noticed it, they were the Melbourne members i think, the further north you go, the more they say it.

As far as your answer though, i could take a camera crew out any where in Melbourne for instance and find league or union games, and get the same responses as that woman was saying,  it is more rubbish by the AFL, so people get behind the West Sydney idea,  i don't give a rat's blerter who says what, i am telling every one now, the West Sydney team will never work, never. It's a huge City, Sydney, on a whole they hate our game and know nothing about it, Judd could walk down the street unnoticed, most of them could.

  10. 60 minutes didn't have to show that for us AFL lovers...we knew that already, but I suppose the NRL fans just had to hear it again and again.

  11. Great expose 60 minutes !!!

    GO the AFL

you cant compare the two games

(well one is for the boys and one for the "girls" !!!!

    AFL RULES !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  12. In a couple of words, it's the culture and history!

AFL unites people all over the country and even the world, heck my friend in England has started watching and loves it! I think it stems from the amount of activity involved in the game - it is certainly not easy to follow so I guess it appeals to those who want more of a mental challenge when watching sport! It could also be regarded as a game that combines the skill from many different sports - look at that basketballer who didnt start playing AFL until he was 17! And now he's playing in the big league! And isn't this the oldest known football code in the world? Look at all those years of building up a fan base... you can't blame people for wanting to be involved in something as big as that!

    Its catching and it's addictive!
