Question:

Anyone set their Air Conditioner at 80 degrees to save the planet and money?

Some of my friends live in homes that are incredibly hot in the summer and cold in the winter. This to save money and the planet (global warming). They set their temp control at 80 degrees in the summer and 60 in the winter. So it is always uncomfortable.

What do you think?

  1. I think the more they do stupid things like that ,  the more energy it saves for us normal people.

  2. Air conditioning is really refrigeration, you may as well leave the fridge door open.

Solar radiation and the same UV that burns our skin is causing buildings to generate extreme heat the building isn't designed or insulated for. The heat is coming through the walls because the walls aren't insulated for those temperatures. Paint the outside of your building light, low-e colors. If your building is shaded, you won't need air conditioning.

If you are using air conditioning, your building isn't complying with codes, it just couldn't be seen. Go to the following link and see what academia of the world is missing on climate change. For those of you that don't believe solar radiation can do this, ask a tradesman or go put on a pair of shorts and sit on the roof. http://www.thermoguy.com/globalwarming-h...

  3. Try not to use it too much at all during the day in the summer, unless it's necessary...and then i put it 78, but i like it cool at night, so i drop it to 76 before bed, then i set it to turn off completely by the time i'm asleep.  In the winter i set it at 65 or 66, but drop to 60 when i'm at work.  If you have it, use it to what makes you comfortable, but don't overuse it or else you'll pay a ton.  But if you can afford to use it any way you want, then that's your call, hey you pay the bill!

  4. Mine is at 70.  I only run it when it gets to 90 or higher and I only run it for a about three hours.  At night, it stays fairly nice with a fan on  and the windows shut.  But I do it to save money.

Global warming is not man made so that's not an issue for me.

  5. mine is set at 68 year round,oh and unless your ac unit has a leak it will not harm the planet to ajust the temp.                     for people with ac units it uses more energy to turn off and on your ac unit than let it be set at a certain temp and let it run all the time they will only kick system on when temp goes out of the preset temp

  6. I went the greenest way because I saw the potential for rising costs for electricity and fuels 10 years ago and worked hard to get ahead of the curve. I insulated my attic and walls to at least 13 and added reflective foil to the rafters in the attic to keep down the amount of heat getting into it. I installed wind driven exhausts to such air out of the attic and eve vents to let fresh air in so heat never has a chance to build up there. The basic insulation keeps heat in during the winter using less gas for heating. And I am looking for ways to heat the floors that do not use gas in the winter. My electric and gas bills right now average without deliver cost about $20 a month.

  7. To save $, maybe...but the planet?

Given the fact that the VIkings came across the Atlantic & set up settlements on Greenland. This was, what a thousand years ago?

They couldnt maintain the settlements because it got cold. You cannot settle comfortably there now. Therefore, it was very much warmer climate-wise a thousand years ago. Considering this, how can anyone worry about global warming?

  8. 77 degrees------- not to save the planet but to save my WALLET from extinction!

  9. I have and A/C, but I set mind at 64 when it is about 90 or hoter then that

  10. I agree with Phil J.

  11. I set the AC at 75 in the Spring.  I set the Heat at 70 in late Fall.  I pay the bill when it arrives.  It's funny how such systems are referred to as "Climate Control"...it's as close as man can get to affecting the climate.

  12. I have one a/c in my house and its located in the bedroom, we turn it on at night once it gets about 75 in the house.  I have the same type of house, cold in the winter, hot in the summer, but I live out in the country and so I frequently open the windows on cool mornings in the summer to let fresh air in, and stale air out.

In the winter, my house stays at 68, but that is chilly, and we keep a space heater in the LR to heat our feet, I also have all hardwood floors in my house, so were constantly wearing slippers.  This winter will be different, I'm having a baby, and I won't let my baby get cold, so it looks like my energy bill will definitely going up.

  13. Why have A/C if you don't use it?

  14. Well if there will so many doing the same i will say no problem with that. But i get cooked at my own house while others have there home temp at -20*C

    no i will pass
