  1. Hydrocephalus is ventricular enlargement with excessive CSF. Manifestations include an enlarged head and brain atrophy. Increased cranial pressure causes irritability and bulging fontanelles in infants. Diagnosis is by ultrasonography in neonates and by CT or MRI in older infants. Treatment usually is with a ventricular shunt procedure.

  2. I was diagnosed with hydrocephalus at birth. I am now 35.  I had a shunt leading to my heart for a short time, then had a vp shunt put in. I had a revision at age 9 and age 15, then had the entire shunt replaced in July 1998.  Unfortunately, the new shunt became clogged, and I needed to have the top part replaced 8 weeks later.  I haven't had any problems since then.

I don't know why you are having so many problems.  I don't think it is anything you are doing, unless you are getting hit on the head a lot--Very hard hits on the head can damage the shunt.  Otherwise, several other things could go wrong, including the valve breaking, the shunt becoming clogged or infected, the tubing tearing, or the connectors coming apart.

Talk to your doctors.  They may have some idea about why you are having so many problems.  If not, and you are able to do so, you may want to consider seeing other doctors for a second opinion.   If hydrocephalus is not treated properly, the pressure on the brain from buildup of fluid could cause temporary or permanent loss of vision, brain damage, or if left untreated long enough, it could cause death.
