What cruise line did you use and was it a good experience? Thinking about taking the RCL cruise that goes to Naples, Rome,... and back to Barcelona on Voyager of the Seas. If you've been on that cruise, any info would be appreciated.

  1. We took this cruise last year, and are taking a similar one this year.  It was our third cruise on the Voyager (we previously sailed her in the Caribbean.) We had an absolutely wonderful time!

The cruise is very port-intensive, and many of the excursions were 8 to 10 hours long. I think we only had one sea day, so we were kinda tired at the end.

In Villefranche we visited Eze and Monte Carlo. Monte Carlo was very nice, but the casino was a letdown. In Livorno (Florence) we visited Florence and Pisa. In Rome we did an all day tour, in Naples we visited Pompeii.

Unless you are familiar with the European rail system I would suggest using ship transportation to and from the cities or ship excursions. Rome and Florence are about 90 minutes away from the port and there were rail strikes in a couple of ports when we visited. Private excursion companies are also available.

And don't forget Barcelona. We're staying an extra couple of days this year because we liked it so much and there's so much to see.

Voyager of the Seas is a great ship. They have rock climbing, in-line skating, miniature golf and ice skating as well as pools, spa treatments, hot tubs, etc.

  2. YES!!, I did take a cruise out of Barcelona that had port stops in Italy.  But our cruise was on the Brilliance of the Seas and it was a 12 day cruise.  But the cruise was one of my favorites of all of my cruises and I loved the port stops, especially Rome and Naples.  In Rome we did a tour from the ship that went to the Vatican City and also the Coliseum, with a lunch in between.  It was all day.  In Naples we did the tour to Pompeii and that was also great.  Our cruise also made a port stop for Florence and Pisa and both of those places were very nice to see.

While I have not been on the Voyager, I have been on two of its twins sister ships, the Adventure and the Mariner, all Voyager Class ships with identical features.  I loved both of the ships.  They are like a smaller version of the new Freedom Class ships.  They have almost all of the same amenities and on board activities as the Freedom Class, just on a slightly smaller scale.  So I can tell you that you will love cruising on the Voyager; I hope to some day.

  4. I have taken a cruise leaving from Barcelona with Princess cruises. If I remember correctly it was either 10 or 12 days with many ports such as Rome, Greece, Naples, Venice, etc. Ours was not a round trip. It started in Barcelona and ended in Venice. Never the less, it was a aw inspiring cruise with many sites to see. Really a great cruise.
