What was the experience like? Would you do it again? How much did it cost? How long did it take?

  1. I've spent a lot of time offshore but I still dream of that long freighter trip.  I've squirreled away a lot of information if you are really interested.  It is expensive, about $200 per day average.  The thing is on a freighter you won't have much entertanment so go with a friend.

My favorite would a proper cruise ship starting in Hong Kong, up through Japan, Russia, Aleutians and down the Alaskan, Canadian coast. That ones about 16 days for about $3,500

  2. My husband & I went on our 1st cruise about 6 years ago with Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL.com) and we loved it.  It was an 8 day from LA to mexico for $830 per person for a balcony room.  For about $150 less per person you can have a room with NO windows called an "inside room".  We've traveled all over the world but the Mexico cruise was just simple!  Drive to LA, get on the ship and relax and have fun, get off at the ports and eat & drink!  We enjoyed it so much we've been on a total of 6 different trips with NCL.  The key is to plan where you want to go in advance.  The earlier you can book your book your trip, the more you'll save.  Most cruise companies have you pay the initial deposit, usually deposit, $200-$500, then you can pay monthly with no interest until paid off.  I would suggest if you live driving distance to a port, LA, Houston, New Orleans, NYC, Miami, plan a trip from there so you don't have to fly and save $$.

We've done the freighters also, and that's very different with limited routes and little or no time in ports plus you have to entertain yourself (no cruise director & bars).

Before I went on my first cruise, a friend told me you'll either love it or hate it right away.  WE LOVED IT!!

    Have Fun!
