Anyone want to help with TV selection?

I am looking to buy a TV (42" inch probably) to mount above my fireplace in the living room. I'd also like to be able to see it clearly from the next room (sharp angle) where I work out. I don't need alot of frills but would like a nice clear pic. Any suggestions or things I need to know about? Thanks!!

  1. try a sharp acqous 42" or sony bravia 40". both are great values and have great picture quality.

  2. An articulating mount will allow you to pull the tv off the wall and turn it toward the other room. They're very expensive in stores but a bargain online. I get mine from mountplus on Ebay (I linked the type you want below).

As for the tv, check-out Sharp Aquos if you want an lcd. The higher the contrast ratio and the faster the response time, the better. With a 42", 720p should be fine but they are putting the better electronics in the 1080p sets so try to view both in the store to see which you prefer.

Mounting over a fireplace is cool but not a great choice. Heat and soot can ruin electronics and the position is too high on the wall. I know a lot of people want it there and I'm sure you'll still do it but I had to let you know.

  3. if you mount above your fire place. steer away from a plasma T.V. they operate at a high temp, the plasma gas leaks out over time and the heat kills the electronics. LCD T.V's don't have a reflective screen like plasma T.V's do. And they run much cooler and last longer.
