I'm a waitress and sometimes I will get stiffed even after I give great service and make sure you have everything that you possibly need. Do people just do not want to tip? I understand some can't afford but their meal. Just wondering..

  1. I hardly ever tip well.  If the bill is $10 and I'm eating alone, I will tip 25 cents.  If the bill is $25 and I'm with a group, I'll tip 50 cents.

  2. i always tip the better the service the better the tip.

for crappy service i will leave a dollar I always tips though this rest assures you get good service for future.

  3. i do valet and i think people should always tip, and if the service is bad atleast a buck 'cause our hourly wages are set up lower than most part time jobs because we're expected to receive tips to make up for that. Which is why im a generous tipper when i go out to eat.....

  4. USA...I always tip the server, and trained my husband to do it, too.  Anywhere from 10 - 30% depending on how good or poor the service was.  I'm happy to say, most of the time it's good enough to give on the higher end.

There's only been once in many years that I didn't tip, and the service was so incredibly bad that we weren't charged for the meals. There were 4 of us, and 3 of the people's orders were wrong, except with me the waiter completely forgot to bring the food before he disappeared for over 20 minutes.  The others never did get their orders right, and by the time mine came, everyone's, including mine, was cold.  Oh yeah, when mine finally came, it was wrong, too.

  5. Wow you know youve lived in the south a little too long when the 1st thought that comes to mind after reading the question title is tipping cows!!!!!!! OH my goodness cant believe i did that :)

Anyways I agree. A small tip is always appreciated. I mean every now and then you encounter waiters/waitresses who are rude (i.e. by basically throwing the plates on the table) and rolling their eyes....now in that case i dont feel the need to tip. I know they might be having a bad day but there should be a level of professionalism there no matter what. I agree waiters/waitresses should always be tipped. I take into account how little you are paid because you are expected to tip.

Hope you get better tippers !

  6. This is the only country in the world where tipping is a custom. And the problem is that a lot of these jobs (waiters, cab drivers, etc) have lower wages because it's expected that they'll get tips to make up for it. It sucks. I always feel bad for them and try to leave generous tips, especially when I'm pleased with the service. But at the same time, it makes me feel like I'm paying so much. And if a meal costs more, why should I have to pay more in tips? The waiters in cheaper restaurants are doing the same amount of work as the ones in more expensive restaurants.

And what's with the tip jars at fast food places? At pretzel stands? I've even seen them at GROCERY stores! This is getting nuts!

It would be nice if these people could get paid real salaries, and we could do away with the tipping culture altogether. Our lives would be so much simpler.

  7. I always tip good.

Sometimes my meal is only 5 or 6 bucks and I tip about 2 or 3 bucks.

I know you guys/gals work hard for tips.

The lady always knows what I want too., she only asks me to make sure.

  8. As a fellow waitress I think that if you have money to go out to dinner be sure to have money to tip. That is how we make a living. Granted there are those people who may not be able to afford it but atleast leave what you can to show gratitude for the service given. I have had those occasions myself where I've gone out to eat, (because I'm a waitress sometimes I can be a little critical,) but I still leave a tip even if the waitress sucked.

  9. If you have the money to eat out, you have the money to tip. If you don't, get your food to go or stay home. Can you tell I've waited tables before? :P

I've had the exact same thing happen to me. I guess some people just don't feel it's necessary, and unfortunately, as a waitress, there's nothing you can do, really, except if you see them again you know that you don't need to make them a top priority. That's how I was with regulars that didn't tip. If you, as a customer, show that you don't appreciate my service, I'll remember it and provide you with minimal service the next time you come in. I'm not rude with them, I just do the bare minimum of what I have to do.

I believe if you have ANY reason for flat-out not tipping, you should either confront the server or the manager with your reason why.

  10. there is an extended debate about this issue during the first five minutes of Reservoir Dogs. Maybe you'll enjoy it. It's pretty funny. The guy who doesn't tip makes a few arguments - that you are just doing your job, that he only tips if the service was special (but his definition of special is pretty extreme), etc.

  11. I would love to give the waiter a tip, but its like paying more for something you really dont have to.. people are stingy... I say they are already getting payed for their job... you dont see doctors and store empolyees, or teachers getting tipped...it should be the same with waiters.. even if i was a waiter i would still hold the same opinion..

  12. I almost always give my waitresses and waiters a good generous tip, especially if they're really good.  Only rarely when they are a b******e is when I won't leave them a tip.

  13. Britt- I know what ya mean. I've been a server also and nothing makes me more mad than people that don't tip.(Except those people who act like they are doing you a favor and throwing a bunch of pennies on the table)!!  Servers work extremely hard and also depending on where you live- don't even make minimum wage. I used to be a waitress in Colorado--I made 2.50 an hour if I wouldn't have make great tips there's no way I could have paid my bills. I always tip well. If you can't afford to tip well, stay at home and cook yourself!!

  14. Never been to San Jose.

  15. 2.13 an hour is nothing no matter how bad service is performed I always tips 15 % If the service is real good expect a big tip . Wait staff is underpaid over stressed an some custumers get what they deserve . I was at a restraunt where I saw a man grouping a waitress , she went around with a smile did her job and stiffed her I felt so bad for her . Some people don't understand what you all go through maybe the service is bad because of men like that . I think they should make it a law to have to tip 15 % let it already be added to your bill . Good luck !

  16. Most people don't realize that T.I.P.S. is an acronym for "To Insure Prompt Service."  They are not automatic.  If I get good service, I tip.  If I don't, I don't.  I never put tips in jars that are on the counters where you are not even served.

After seeing the ratings to this answer, here is an n add-on for those of you who feel you should tip if you get lousey service...  you're welcome to keep throwing away your money.  I tip well if I get good service, but do not feel obligated to do so if I don't get good service.

  17. i don't beleive in tipping . if you have a good boss and good wages you shouldn't need tipping

  18. I'm not afraid to say this, but people who don't tip are generally as___holes and act like they have a sense of entitlement.

  19. To people who dont tip your an @$@#%#%^#^#%

most of these waitress are working for a cheap #$#&$*& and are relying on those tips to get things for the kids and family in some states you must tip a percentage of your bill I found this in Montana but some resturaunts have a tip jar on the counter and split the tips after there shift I will not tip them I feel the person serving me should recive all the tip leave.

  20. I always tip, unless the waitress in unbearable. What many people don't understand is that minimum wage for servers is FAR less than minimum wage for other jobs. Not only that but the majority of servers are also either working their way through college, high school students, or attempting to pay bills in one way or another. If you were raised to respect people you will tip, they are called servers not slaves. You shouldn't go out to eat if you can not afford the entire meal (which includes tip).

  21. yeah because we already paid so much for tax and some waiters do a really bad job with food and stuff!

  22. I got a quarter Christmas Eve from a dude that spent the ENTIRE TIME bragging about the beautiful car he just bought himself.

When you ask this question you should also ask "what country are you from". I have learned (from being on Y!A for a year) that some countries don't tip at all & some tip 10%.

Which should explain your tips AND your answers.
