My son has cold urticaria (with rheumatoid arthritis). Most Dr.s have never heard of such a thing. Finally found a allergy specialist who actually has knowledge of this condition, but said no help is available for my son. Have been told alternative meds will help but his insurance will not cover it. Left Alaska to Texas and that has made it much worse. This is a allergy to the cold, only when he is cold his joints lock up, in great pain, will vomit, can't eat, skin swells, will grow tired very rapidly. He was 4 years old when I first saw symptoms, looks like a typical allergy reaction. We were outdoors during winter time(which had never posed a threat prior) I saw hives cover areas of exposed skin, would eventually cover his whole body within minutes. Just wanting to hear from others who have had or has this condition too.

  1. The best drug used for all types of urticaria is Zyzal, it is a new prescription anti-histamine and it works really great, Zrytec is also great and it is now over the counter.

  2. I'm 15 and have had cold urticaria for 2 years..since i was 13.Even if i just stay in an air conditioned room for too long my skin breaks out in hives. It never really bothered me since ive lived in Hawaii for as long as i can remember but i just moved to michigan and i break out a LOT now cuz its cold here.My doctor in hawaii knew what it was and just prescribed me claritin for everyday use and Atarax if i know I'm going to be exposed within 2 hours.Ive read somewhere about this guy who had cold urticaria too and went on a gluten-free diet and never broke out again.Dont know maybe that`ll work..people just usually just grow out of cold urticaria.

  3. I have cold urticaria as well, and sometimes there really isn't much you can do. Avoid swimming pools, shakes, ice cream, ice cold drinks, and such. Cold wind is *much* more difficult on me than if it's even colder and still air. Carry an Epi Pen with you, as well keep one inan easy place to get to if (or when) he does go into anaphylactic shock.

I live in Minnesota, and my doctors said that I live in the wrong place, but I've even had it hit in California (uppers 60's and windy at the beach). A real pain in the rump!

Definitely check out this site, as they have lots of great information & support for those struggling with hives and angioedema. Hugs and best of luck to you!
