i'm going to be 17 soon and i'm planning on getting my permit. i live with my aunt so if i get my license i would most likely be under her name for insurance. the problem is that shes worried that if i do get into a huge car accident, then theres a chance that we would lose our house. but i really need to drive because i need to work and my aunt is working too so it would be hard for her to drive me to work. she also said that car insurance for teens is really expensive and i know that that's true. what should i do? by the way she has state farm insurance and i would need to get a car to drive if i get my license because my aunt only has one car right now. but im definitely not going to get a new car, probably a used compact car like honda, mitsubishi, or hyundai because i know that the age of your car and the type of car you drive effects how much your insurance will cost. any advice on what i should do?

  1. try going on your own policy it is going to be pricey either way you go you just gotta kind of suck it up and pay out your ***

    Try ALLSTATE

  2. You are right in assuming you would be under her insurance and that her rates will go up when you start driving.  One possible solution is to pay the difference in insurance to your aunt once you get a car and add it to her policy.  This normally results in a lower rate than if you get your own policy.  Also, shop around between insurance companies to find a company which doesn't charge astronomically (this may or may not be State Farm)

You mentioned getting a used compact car and this DOES result in a lower premium.  One way to drastically cut back on the premium you would owe would be to get a 'beater' which you would pretty much junk if you got in an accident.  You can then waive Collision and Comprehensive coverage (which covers damages specifically to your vehicle) which normally are the most expensive coverages. (All states require you to carry Bodily Inujry and Property Damage which covers someone else if you hit them so you cannot waive these coverages)

Hope this helps and good luck.

  3. For auto insurance the obvious way to get a great rate is do a rate comparison on car policies. Make sure that you choose similar policies with the same limits, car type, location, etc so that all things are a good comparison.

What I usually recommend is an online comparison quote at http://www.InsureAutoNow.info since they have top name insurers and will give multiple prices on car insurance polices.
