ok, so i live in dublin, ireland. I want to go to malaga, spain. i can fly direct at the time i want to for about €220.

i know i could also get a ferry, and trains.:

across england->england to france -> france to spain -> across spain. endng in malaga.

so, if i had loads of time to kill....is there any way the train/ferry method would be significantly cheaper??

oppinions/guestimations( no,thats no a real word) welcome.

or suggestions on a cheeper rout.

thanks =D

  1. I've done both and although the ferry train option is great it is more expensive generally unless you qualify for a youth ticket.

You have to remember the extra time it takes and that involves more meals and stopovers.

Good luck whatever way you decide to go and don't get too burnt is hot down here this year.

  2. It is very unlikely that it will be cheaper.

If you travel with an InterRail pass, going for non high speed trains, so you do not need to pay a surcharge, and be careful which ferry you take, you are likely traveling the cheapest.

You can find InterRail prices here:

    http://www.interrailnet.com/2_buy_now

Second class, 5 days travel out of 10, under 26 is 159 Euro,

On top of that comes your ferry, your ticket in Ireland and if needed seat reservations.

If you are over 26, if your total trip will take longer than 10 days or you travel longer than 5 days the price will go up.

You can find travel schedules for the train by using one of the rail planners, I like the German one in English:

    http://www.bahn.de/p/view/international/...

    For ferries:

    http://www.directferries.co.uk/routes.ht...

But also read the faq and other info on the InterRail site, as there are some reductions on some ferries, but I have never been able to work out which.

You might be able to travel cheap by just using ferries, (Ireland to England and England to Spain, or Ireland to France and train from there,) or by booking early and getting the cheapest tickets, but I would not know where to look for those.
