  1. Many successful handicappers have shared their strategies with the public.  Tom Ainslie wrote a very comprehensive introduction to racing called "Ainslie's Complete Guide to Thoroughbred Racing" which, while slightly dated still expalins many of the basic terms and handicapping strategies.  If Ainslie is too basic, James Quinn wrote a book called "The Best of Thoroughbred Handicapping:  Learning Ideas & Methods".  Andy Beyer (creator of Beyer Speed Figures) wrote four books on handicapping with Speed Figures, most recently Beyer on Speed.  Tom Brohamer wrote "Modern Pace Handicapping" of course about pace handicapping.

The best way to avoid losing at the track is to learn and practice the art of money management.  Sometimes handicapping can be easy - heck favorites win almost a third of the time.  But as all handicappers know if you bet too much money on a race it is possible to win the race and still lose money.  "Winning Thoroughbred Strategies" is a good primer on money management.  Mark Cramer's "The Odds On Your Side" is also a good one.
