I'm currently pre-med and I wanted to know how much did you work when you were in school or did you just take loans and find scholarships to pay for things?

  1. during the premed years, I waitressed every weekend (fri, sat and sun).  during med school, I actually continued my sat and sun shifts for a few months, believe it or not.  I did not know a single person who worked during med school, we all pretty much lived off of loans, scholarships or parents.  I didnt have parents who would help and I did pick up a waitressing job in the summer between 1st and 2nd year med school but that was it.  It is nearly impossible to work and go to med school at the same time, the expection is that you will not be working during med school as it is very demanding

  2. Worked none in medical school...there was no time.  Loans and scholarships are good, especially if you live in a state where they pay off your loans, but these are usually tied only to those who go into primary care.

I had one friend who worked in medical school, he would MC at a nightclub in New Orleans.  I do not know how much he worked in total but Im sure it was not for paying off loans.  It was fun, he liked to sing, etc.

My best advice, live poorly.  If you can even make the interest payments, your better to put more of that towards your loans, to the max allowable that the IRS will give you credit for.  Basically, once you become a doctor and can afford larger loan payments, the IRS cancels any 'credit' for paying off your loans.

  3. i worked as much as possible when i was in med-school!all those loans will catch up to in no time!

i was in school 8 yrs and only took one loan that was the first one to get into med  school

i know ppl say take the help that is there for you but i think of it this way, i worked my butt off in school for so long i don;t want to have to start giving my money away as soon as is started making it to pay loans back!  well good luck in school!

  4. My husband just finished med-school. If at all possible, you shouldn't work because you are gonna be exhausted from school and studying, and you will absolutely have to find down time. Ten hours of classes, then 7-8 hours of studying each night didn't leave him time to work anyway. That was before residency, after his residency started, I rarely saw him. Find all the grants, scholarships and loans you can. Allow yourself the "luxury" of having some sort of life while in med-school.
