Question:

Anyone with snowboarding experience please help?

I recently purchased a k2 va va voom snowboard, which I knew was a freestyle board, but I didn't know was a jib board. I'm an amatuer who's interested in the park and rails, but also wants to be able to make it down a trail in one piece. I'm not concerned about going very fast, but will I still be able to turn and carve on this board?

  1. yes youll be fine

  2. A jib board is just an extreme variation of a freestyle board that is twin tipped, has a centered stance, has more longitudinal flex, and softer sidewalls. Some jib boards also have slightly thicker edges to allow more aggresive detuning.

Jib boards also tend to be a bit shorter than most other boards.  Besides that it should be just as rideable as any other type of board.

In fact I wouldn't be surprised if it turned out to be easier to learn on a jib board since it should be easier to initiate turns (just thinking out loud, so it's not from experience). The only issue is that it might not be as stable at high speeds but if you're just starting out, that shouldn't matter too much anyways.

I think you should be just fine.

  3. There's no such thing as a board that is made ONLY for jibbing.  It may not be the most ideal board to learn on (I haven't personally ridden that board), but that does not at all mean you can't learn on it.  As long as it's a reasonable size for your height/weight/stature/style, you should be good to go.  The Va Va Voom is a lightweight, centered-stance jibber, so you'll like the heck out of it once you start spinning.  Go ahead and scoot your stance back on the board though, just until you're really trying to throw some stuff in the park.  Make sure that you have the right BOOTS.  They have to fit right or carving, the park, and everything else will be much more difficult to pick up.

I suggest you get out on the slopes and really get your carving/edging down before you attack the park too hard.  Trying to stomp an off-balance landing is pretty futile without the ability to dig in an edge and right yourself:-)

Have fun!  And keep throwing out questions as they come!
