1. Basically, Mrs. Kinsolving owns a boarding house and was highly insulted and upset when one of her guests, a socialite named Mrs. Fischer-Suympkins, spread the word that she had seen a ghost in her room. The insulting part is that the ghost was a farm worker carrying a hod. Mrs. Kinsolving, wanting to impress everyone, wouldn't have been insulted if the ghost had been a high class ghost, perhaps a relative who had fought in the Revolutionary War.

She's telling this story to Mrs. Bellamy Bellmore, another socialite, who sympathizes with her and agrees to stay in the room that night to see if maybe she'll have a better visitation. Mrs. Bellmore also hopes to meet Mrs. Kinsolving's son Terence to see whether he's worth including in her social circles. (Remember, O. Henry wrote about New York City and its society. At the time, it was very important to be "in" with the right social circles. Someone as "classy" as Mrs. Bellmore could get a person invited to the "right" places to meet the "right" people.) She talks with Terence who tells her that his mother would be so happy if someone would have a visitation from a better class of ghost. They look through photo albums and discuss Terence's family history. Terence tells her of his relatives who had fought in the Revolution. He really cared about his mother and wanted her to be happy. He knew that this whole business with the "low class ghost" upset his mother.

The next morning at breakfast, Mrs. Bellmore tells all the guests that she was visited by a ghost dressed in Revolutionary War attire! Everyone, of course, is impressed and Mrs. Kinsolving is thrilled, believing the ghost to be a general who was her husband's relative. Mrs. Bellmore and Terence talk in private and she tells Terence how the ghost awoke her with a kiss! Terence seems shocked, but Mrs. B implies that she actually enjoyed the kiss and would have given him more if he hadn't disappeared. Eventually, Mrs. B leaves for her train and, before the train takes off, takes a handkerchief out of her bag and throws it overboard. The scene cuts to Terence who is packign up a Revolutionary War costume and telling his valet to return it to a costume shop for him. The implication is that he was the ghost who woke Mrs. Bellmore. The story ends as Mrs. B is making up a guest list for a social gathering, but crosses Terence's name off the list becasue he's too "shy."

  2. Love O'Henry stories! They have great endings.

This one was a young man trying to help out his mother -- and getting his comeuppance!
