II'm going to be staying in Melbourne for two weeks in early August. Its my first time in Australia so any information would help.

What is the weather going to be like at that time?

How do people dress in Melbourne?

What are fun things I can do around the area?

  1. Well, Melbourne has a reputation for having 4 seasons in one day, for instance, this morning on my way to work, it was storming, pouring down with rain, but now, 1 hour later, its just blue sky and not a cloud in sight, don't get me wrong-its still cold. August is winter here in Melbourne. Make sure you bring a coat as the wind can get mighty cold!!! Normal winter fashion is pretty much as standard as anywhere, trench coats with ankle boots and tights with a scarf and beret or hat. There is alot to do in Melbourne. It depends where your staying, if your staying in Melb CBD there is Bourke street mall (shopping, shopping and more shopping) there's the aquarium, eureka tower (tallest building in Melbourne-they have a room that moves out over the city on the highest floor, eek!), there's st kilda beach (maybe a bit cold this time of year to venture there) lots of clubs and pubs and plenty of eating places, Crown Casino (always something happening there 24hrs a day) China town, lots to eat at Southbank, and heaps heaps more!!! i have only scratched the surface. Hope this helps!!!

  2. The weather will be pretty cold, at the moment its between about 5 - 18 degrees celcius.

The weather however can change really quickly... although we haven't had a lot of rain in Melbourne recently which used to be what we were known for!

In Winter I tend to wear jeans, boots and a nice top or a casual dress with tights and boots / ballet flats and a cardigan / jacket and scarf.

most of my friends also dress this way too; but pretty much you'll see people wearing anything - from trackpants and runners to really formal outfits.

We do however appreciate when people dress nicely... not only foreigners but also our own... some people don't really understand it.

I think the main thing is you'll have to bring some comfy shoes for walking around in but also some nice clothes (ie not jeans and runners) if you want to be able to go to some restaurants and clubs.

Basically you will have to bring mostly wintery clothes, especially for at night time but during the day sometimes it warms up and you'll wish you were wearing something a bit more summery.

Fun things to do around Melbourne----

walk around the city. Have a look at Flinders Street Station, Federation Square, the National Gallery of Victoria, Bourke Street Mall, Melbourne Central (MC and BSM are both for shopping)...

There is a ferris wheel that is open near the river which is pretty fun especially when it is getting dark.

Southbank is fun, you can head down to Crown Casino and they often have fun stuff to do there, as well as a cinema.

You can go up the Eureka Tower which I believe is the tallest residential building in the southern hemisphere and there is this little box called 'the edge' that takes you out of the building and is made of glass so you are basically looking straight down on the ground hundreds of metres below!!

Go to an AFL (Australian Football League) match at Telstra Dome or the MCG (Melbourne Cricket Ground) - that's pretty fun!

Wander around the tan which is basically a foot / bike path that goes around the Royal Botanic Gardens... it's really pretty and very relaxing.

  3. as a melbournian

they are some of the good places to go to.

    fun things...

    hmmm

go to an AFL footy game

    (go western bulldogs)

  4. Melbourne is the unofficial capital city of Australia, it's stylish and chic and all round amazing.

    Weather

When melburnians say that there are four seasons in one day they mean it! It could be pouring one second then sunny the next so always be sure to have a coat and an umbrella.

    Fashion

As I said melburnians are very stylish and melbourne is known as the fashion capital of australia. I spend tonns of time in the CBD and it is rare to see some one badly dressed. Most people dress very voguesque and since it is winter in August dark colours such as black, grey, chocolates and purples. The "indie" dress scene is also pretty huge with melbourne being home to many young, fresh designers so some people do dress very uniquely.

Guys tend to fall into three groups

Buisnessmen - Might not even be buisnessmen but always go out in suits.

Typical Aussie Bloke- Believe it or not but they are begining to die out. Usually a pair of old jeans and an old t-shirt or male version of a tank top - yes! in winter.

Alternative Guys - WOW they dress so well and definately stand out from the crowd, usually wear top brands with stunning jackets usually teamed with straight leg jeans - very hot - awesome hair :)

    Girls

Women tend to dress similar though they usually add in their own twist/personality into their clothes.

    Pretty simple:

Get anything that is in fashion at the time, then when it comes to accesories and shoes go for something that is uniquely you.

    Fun things to do

I dont know if you're over 18 or not so I'll just list everything.

Melbourne isnt the type of city where there are tonns of sights to see. The best way to experience melbourne is to live like a melburnian.

Football - even if you've never seen a game before you will love it - trust me. If you're going with a male partner they will love it for how rough and fast it is, and you will enjoy having a little perve at some of the players ;). Footy - easiest sport to understand ever!

Shopping- Chapel Street and Bridge Road just to name a few, also dont be afriad to explore the city, some of the alleyways and arcades have some amazing clothes.

Resturants - Food capital of Australia - Lygon Street Carlton aka. little italy is a favourite of mine.

Pubs- Always a great atmosphere and lots of fun

Soccer, Rugby ect - Melbourne has their own teams after all melburnians are the most sports mad people in the world!

    The Aquarium

The rialto sky deck provides a great view of the city same as the Eureka Towers.

    Clubs bars ect - tonns

If you need anymore lol message me! Have a great time in the best city in the world

  5. Weather: unpredictably cold/rainy/windy. August=Winter.

People will dress all rugged up in dull grey or black hues.

Fun things:now that 's stretching it:

Maybe take a trip to Sydney

  6. Its cold! Brings pants and warm jumpers and jackets and scalves! You can pretty much wear anything, especially if you are in the city. Jeans are very common, skinny legs for girls especially, flares are way out now, no one really wears them anymore.

Ballet flats are big, and boots are too. Everyone wears cardigans and legging and stockings are big.

Look on the Shop Til You Drop website

    http://www.shoptilyoudrop.com.au/

That basically sums up Australian Fashion.

And I have to tell you, DO NOT wear ugg boots and trackies. That is so out of fashion now I can't tell you, and it's also very scummy. Not trying to be a snob, just honestly that is fashion now in Melbourne.

You can go to pubs, nightclub, Federation Square, Luna Park (in St Kilda is awesome! though will be very cold this time of year) shopping..there is the rialto tower and the eureka.

You can go see a AFL football game at the MCG.

And you have got to go to Soverign Hill in Ballarat, which is like a gold mining village, where you can go look for gold.

  7. take raincoat ,brolly and wellies.
