My group for my special education class is doing their presentation on Learning Disablities, I was assigned the question:

Any ways in which the disability could be helped (example: Attention Deficet Disorder can be helped with medication to allow the individual to concentrate)

I was wondering what are some other ways a learning disability could be helped.

  1. Alternative therapy is wonderful . . .  see answer above.

  2. teaching them the same lesson but using different techniques for the same lesson.ex.-use written words &pictures at the same time to teach the same thing .  some may understand  the pictures better and vice-versa. in any case you've reached both.

  3. Occupational therapy is an excellent way of helping children with learning disabilities without using drugs.

    I wish more doctors, teachers and therapists knew about this.

  4. Types of supports that are very useful when working with Learning Difficulty are;

    Cognitive Behavioural therapy

    Multi Sensory therapy

    Occupational therapy

    Physical therapy

    Speech & or language therapy

    Music therapy

    And most importantly Individualized Educational Program (IEP's) which focus on students strengths, rather than their weaknesses.

    Also other things that help students with Learning Disabilities is to give them extra time to do tasks, test and assignments. Use of adaptive technology in class.

  5. Gearing the information to age and learning abilities.  Often times, you will notice from your own schooling, that tests had basically a few pertinent questions on a test. For ex.: the date of the Civil War (without having to learn ALL the details of each battle). Keep it simple and teach just the basics. We learn by repetativeness.
