Anywhere, and too late?

As a youth I always dreamed of surfing but never took the initiative to learn. Now in my mid 30's my regrets have turned to longings. Is there anywhere in Florida to really surf, and can you teach an old dog new tricks?

  1. You're never too old to learn. I can personally recommend Jeff Kennedy of Cocoa Beach as an instructor. He's an awesome guy, great instructor, and will take you to where the waves are. Call him and ask him about lessons. Jeff is 30 something too.

  2. you can definitely learn to surf when your older.  i started surfing when i was 8 years old with my dad pushing me into waves.  jump forward 10 years and i started helping push him into waves and teaching him to surf.  now its been 14 years since he first helped me and now we surf togeather (hes turning 59 this fall, so thirties definitely isnt too old).  as far as where to surf in florida i dont like to name exact spots, especially online because its just part of the surfing code that you dont name exact spots, but if you post where you are located i could tell you the general beaches to go to and leave it up to you to find the waves.  there are tons of spots on the east coast and many on the gulf (which is a lot less consistant).  just remember when you hit the water to obey the basic guidelines of surfing so you dont cause problems with the people already out there.  heres a link of basic rules that most people follow in the water.

so go to the beach, rent a longboard, be respectful of your fellow surfers, be aware of your environment, and good luck

  4. yes and yes you can always learn to surf as long as you have commitment

  5. oh ya lots of people learn when they are older. but do us all a fav. don't come on yahoo and ask how to get up. just go to a surf instuctor. i can gaurenty you that know one on hear could help you. even if they have years of expereince. some things can't be showed on a sreen.

desin in florada. remenber i'm pretty sure that the east coast surfing is better, just look up some beachs and talk to people.

    good luck.

  6. while it might be easier to pick up surfing when you're younger, you can definitely start at any age. i'm an instructor at a surf school here in santa cruz, ca and have helped literally hundreds of adults your age and older stand up for their first time. it's an absolute blast. don't let your regrets continue any longer; go to a surf school in your area and start taking lessons.

regarding surfing in florida, yes there are places to surf. i've been to, and surfed at, cocoa beach but there is a whole host of other locations. visit a local surf shop and ask the folks there about good breaks for beginners.

  7. You can check out surfline.com. They have cams set up al around the world. When you find a spot, just find a surf camp for someone to teach you. You are never to old to surf. Surfing is for everyone, no matter how old. Recently, I have a friend from High School that never surf before. Since he lives on the opposite side of the country, I told him to just go to the beach and sign up for a camp. Since then, he has been enjoying surfing and does whenever he has the chance.

    Enjoy

  8. There are literally hundreds of 30 somethings taking up surfing evry year. That's cool, because I would like to teach the world to surf. That's bad, because it's seems like 90% of 'em are yuppy B@st%^ds wearin wetsuits in 70 degree water, drinking green tea and riding tuflite popout long boards, which they drive to the beach on top of their Volvos.

Okay, enough of my bitter, nasty, gray collar social commentary. I can be a jealous old man, when I see the 30 somethings buying $3million beach houses, while I am stuck with staying in motels, or sponging off friends.

You ARE NOT TOO OLD TO LEARN. Go take lessons, learn the right way. Learn how to be a waterman, how to swim, and body surf and dodge the rip currents and then master surf boarding, the sport of kings. Surfammo knows his S%^t in Florida, so give his suggestion a try. The best surf in FL is from about Juno beach north to the GA border on the Atlantic Coast. A young fellow who answers here, Da Surf Man is a Jacksonville dude, he might have some ideas of FL lesson. Surfline.com has info on about anything you can think of in the surf industry.

You are not too old (yet) I was out today, and spent most of my time playing with my 5&6 year old grandsons, who were mastering the art of boogie boarding. i did paddle out and splash around, but there was no juice in the little low tide thigh highs that were breaking about 100 yards out on a sandbar. But, at almost 56 years, and living two hours away from the beach, IT WAS A GLORIOUS DAY! 42 years of surfing, what a trip.
