Former Saturn Moscow Oblast defender, Aleksei Igonin, has shared his thoughts ahead of the Russian Premier League tie between Anzhi Makhachkala and Zenit St. Petersburg at Petrovsky stadium on Monday.
As things stand, Anzhi are at the 2nd spot on the league table with 40 points and Zenit, on the other hand, are sitting just next to the Makhachkala-based club on the 3rd spot with 37 points.
Consequently, the upcoming match between the two top tier Russian teams could well decide about who will hold the leading spot in the Russian championship until March, when the championship restart after the winter break.
The last time these two teams played against each other at Dynamo Stadium (Makhachkala), the St. Petersburg club managed to claim a massive point against Anzhi on the away turf.
And while many have questioned the defending champions defence following their below par defensive performances in domestic and European front, Igonin is of the belief that the Meshki can survive Anzhi’s attack if Luciano Spalletti
chooses a better composition.
Igonin tipped Spalletti to start the upcoming match with Bruno Alves, insisting that the Portuguese defender has been impressive since the start of the ongoing campaign.
"It all depends on Spalletti’s decision. If, for example he starts with Bruno Alves I do not think Anzhi will trouble them too much. By the way, the Dagestani club are well aware of their own defensive problem.”
“I assume that the strategic task of the two managers will be to keep the gap. Guus Hiddink's team aims to win the championship and I think they have everything for that.” Anzhi are on the move. They have claimed some good results
in the championship and in European competition.”
“But I think Zenit can bounce back in the league after their turmoil.” The former http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/FC-Chornomorets-Odesa-c39088 player was quoted as saying.
The 36-year-old Russian stopper went on to admit that the team with better defence will win and admitted that both the teams are exceptionally good offensively.
