Apart from 1988 has there ever been a year since 1951 when the driver with most points hasn't won the title?

Prost 105 Senna 94. Only a certain number of scores could count so after discarding of the required numbers Prost fell behind Senna.

In 1964 Surtees won the title with 40pts to Graham Hill's 39, Hill had scored 41, but had to drop the 2 points he scored at Spa.

That is the only other occasion it happened.

Don't think so. I remember there have been years though when another driver has won much more races but didn't win the championship like:

Mansell in 1987 and 1986

Prost in 1982 an 1983

Moss in 1958

Not since they stopped dropping races. Athough I believe that a couple of times, a driver lost the championship due to a penalty. Alonso and Hamilton last year ring a bell for some reason
