I can understand that there needs to be some, even if for our own good.

By excluding 911, I don't suggest there are lies involved there, I was just narrowing the field, to exclude the tinfoil hat brigade answering.

I don't think it's lies so much.  I think it's things that they just don't tell us, like the stockpiles of weaponized smallpox and plague manufactured during the cold war in the USSR that can exterminate human life across large swaths of the planet.  Most folks don't know about it and the government didn't announce this when they got the evidence from a Russian defector and American spy satellites back in the day.
