Apartment lease and credit

My credit isn't too great, most of my mistakes were made when i was 18-19. I am 22 now and pay everything on time however, my credit still isn't good enough to qualify for an apartment. For the last year I have lived with my boyfriend and only he has been on the lease... The manager here hasnt had any problem with it but now we're looking for a new apartment. We're quiet, we pay rent on time... i just dont qualify. What can we do? Will apartments let him sign the lease and just do a background check on me and list me as an occupant? Or do we just not have a chance?

  1. Try asking your current landlord to give you a reference, even a verbal one will do for starters, (but an email / letter will be better) to the new landlord or  credit check people outlining your current situation and specially mention what sort of tenant you are. It all helps...

  2. There's no reason why you can't continue as you are right now.  Only his name on the lease.  Just keep working on that credit problem and eventually you will be back on track.

  3. Most smart landlord require all adult applicants to fill out an application and be considered as joint applicants.

If this is the case, you must both fill out applications and qualify. If you do not qualify, you both get denied as joint applicants.
