Apartment lease and occupants

Question

if there will be another occupant in my apartment (i.e.) my boyfriend, who will be living with me, does he have to sign the lease?

there is a section on the application asking to list all persons under 18 and other adults who will occupy the unit without signing the lease - what does that mean? does he have to sign? it asks for social security number? will they run a credit check on them? if they have bad credit, will that keep me from getting the apartment even though they will not be paying the rent?

The landlord has the right and responsibility to other tenants to know who is living on his property.  He will want to run a credit check and backround check on your boyfriend.  He may or may not have to sign the lease...that's up to the landlord.

the landlord probally needs to know who all will be in the apt......for example if its a one bedroom you should have only one or two people in it. You should only have your name on  lease if thats what you want...if things dont work out with your boyfriend there would be no issue as to who gets the place, but just an FYI on the other hand if he were to do damage to the place as the person signing lease you would be the person responsible for any repairs. He would not be liable.No need for SS# to anyone not on lease. Landlords may run credit check on anyone that signs lease.

When you sign a lease all the words matter. Occupant has legal weight in any dispute over any thing that may happen. Like a fight with the boyfriend and the cops are called and he says he lives there and you say he doesn't. [an example only] He should sign if he is going to live there. If the land lord finds him there without it he may go to jail for trespassing or just be thrown out. Or you being in default on the lease since you signed it as being a condition of the lease. They may run a check on him and it could make a difference in their decision.
