Question:

Apartment rental in Vancouver?

There's a potential job out there in Vancouver which I'm considering, but the pay is a little less than what I'm expecting. As I have no real experience with housing prices in Vancouver, I would like to know what's reasonable and what isn't.

Also, most places I've looked at don't have air conditioning. Is this typical of Vancouver? I don't mind provided it's cool enough but coming from a place where normal summer temperatures can hit 38+ with the humidex, I'm feeling a little cautious.

  2. Rents depend on where you want to live. They are cheaper the further you go from down town. Go th www.craigslist.org and find the Vancouver page and click on places to rent to get an idea of cost.

As for air conditioning almost no housing has A/C as it is unnecessary. There are perhaps 5 to 10 days all summer where you may need to use a fan. It does not get that hot there. The proximity to the ocean moderates the temperature and a day where it hits 30 C is a very hot day in Vancouver. Summer highs in the low 20C range are the most common.

And the humidity never seems much of a bother. It can get high now and then but it is a lot lower than eastern Canada.

The climate in Vancouver is actually quite good. but air conditioning is a non issue in Vancouver.

  3. In Burnaby people seem to be paying around $850-$1000 for a one bedroom, more if its in an own-only building with limited rentals or for 2 bedroom.

Vancouver itself though, as mentioned above, the closer you get the more it goes up. I have a couple of buddies renting on Commercial drive, a basement suite, $1200 for 2 bedroom but that is a pretty good deal, and they do have upstairs neighbours and shared laundry only.

Downtown or Kitsilano though, 1 bedrooms seem to start around $1200 minimum and go up from there.

Yes, no air-conditioning is pretty reasonable and common. A fan and an open window is what you'll make do with most of the time. It does get very warm sometimes in the summer but it's not usually for more than a handful of days out of the whole summer. I've never had a problem with just an open window, I did grow up in a hot climate though. You will probably find it very moderate if you are used to 38+ and won't need more than a fan.

  4. Rent in Vancouver starts at $850 for a bachelor to over $4000 per month, depending on location.

You are used to a tropical climate, and will feel cold all the time, even when the temperature is as high as 33 degrees Celsius. You will be freezing in winter when the temperature drops to minus 2 or 3 degrees.
